Well it was back down to Earth with a bump for the players this week as we fell to our first defeat of the pre-season to Leek Town.
The lads have worked really hard pre-season and have had some good results. However, whatever the results, pre-season matches are all about increasing fitness levels in preparation for the first game of the season.
The matches give me and other managers a chance to have a look at one or two players on trial and to bed-in new signings. This can be frustrating for supporters, who eagerly want to see how their team will look this coming season.
This will be a busy week for all clubs, with managers making last minute signings before the start of the season. I personally will be continuing to look out for players to strengthen my squad throughout the early part of the season.
The Blue Square leagues kick off their season this Saturday, whereas supporters of teams lower in the pyramid will have to wait an extra week to get their season under way.
Up and down the country, football supporters will be digging out their scarves and buying the latest team shirts. The smell of Bovril and pie and peas will again fill the air at most non league grounds!!
This week I cannot go without mentioning the sad news that Sir Bobby Robson passed away after a long battle with cancer. I, like many others, was truly inspired by his infectious enthusiasm for the game and his ability as a coach.
The years that he gave to the game will never be forgotten and he will always be remembered as a true footballing legend and a man who dedicated his whole life to football.
