This is it then, the fun and games start today.
Come 4.45pm this afternoon some will be smiling, some will be thinking “where did it all go wrong”. I for one hope I am smiling!! It will be a tough season with 42 games ahead.
There will be some surprises as there always is, with some teams coming from nowhere to push for the play-offs and those getting caught up in a relegation fight. I feel that money talks and the big spenders will be up there again.
This is the same in most leagues at all levels, but as Gloucester proved last year, you can win without massive budgets and cause shocks. The bookies don’t get it wrong often, and I would agree that Farnborough will certainly be favourites, along with Cambridge, Brackley, Oxford, and newcomers Truro City, although new to the league they will be up there as they have a budget to compete with the top teams.
It will be interesting to see how the other new teams such as Nuneaton and Leamington perform and from what I hear they should both be challenging for the play-offs. As for the other end of the table I feel that Merthyr could get themselves out of trouble.
They have had issues off the field which have been well documented and will be starting with minus 10 points. They need to get off to a flying start though to claw back points early, if not they may be in for a long hard season.
I would love to see them stay up as I use to play for them and there are many good people there. What Gary Sheppard and Danny Carter achieved last season and getting a squad together this year is fantastic, so good luck to them and the players. Halesowen have also had difficulties but again I am sure they are a club that can put these behind them.
Lots of clubs are feeling pressure at the moment, and money is tight etc, but we just have to get on with the job the best we can. I hope that over the next few months Chairman are patient and give all of us managers time to do our jobs.
These days’ people expect results, regardless of money and off field problems, but it is always the manager that will carry the can. This is not going to change and I am
So I wish all my fellow managers the best of luck this year. We all come under the same stress levels and pressure to deliver and at times our emotions can run high, but we can all appreciate what each other is going through.
